Signs of a hidden leak

• A water bill that jumped without explanation.
• The water meter moving with everything turned off.
• Stains, bubbling paint or warped floors.
• A musty smell or the sound of running water.

Burst pipe? Do this now

1. Shut off the main water valve.
2. Open a cold faucet on the bottom floor to drain the lines.
3. Switch off power to wet areas at the breaker, from a dry spot.
4. Call a plumber.

Preventing frozen pipes

In a hard freeze, keep cabinet doors under sinks open, let a faucet drip, and keep the heat on even when away. Pipes in exterior walls, crawl spaces and garages freeze first.
