How to keep pipes from freezing

Simple steps before a hard freeze.

  • Let faucets on outside walls drip on the coldest nights.
  • Open cabinet doors under sinks so warm air reaches the pipes.
  • Disconnect garden hoses and shut off outdoor spigots from inside.
  • Insulate pipes in crawl spaces, attics and garages.
  • Keep the heat on, even when you're away.
  • Know where your main shut-off valve is before you need it.

If a pipe freezes, keep the faucet open and warm the pipe gently with a hair dryer. Never use an open flame. If it bursts, shut off the main and call a plumber.
